Women’s Affinity Crevasse Rescue Course
Crevasse rescue is a core skill for glacier travel at any level. Mastery of these skills empowers individuals to travel in glaciated terrain with increased safety margins, confidence, and independence.   The Women’s Affinity Crevasse Rescue course is for women (queer, trans, cis-gendered) aiming to hone their proficiency in this crucial skill. Designed to foster inclusivity and accessibility from the ground up, this course offers a supportive learning environment for gaining a strong foundation in crevasse rescue. Taking this course in the early season will support folks in tackling personal climbing objectives and identifying educational next steps.  This comprehensive program provides an introductory overview of essential techniques and systems required for both group and solo crevasse rescue scenarios. Participants will develop vital skills such as effective self-arrest, building snow anchors, and creating basic (2:1 and 3:1) and advanced (5:1 and 6:1) haul systems. Additionally, we’ll cover rope ascension and rappelling within the context of rescue operations, equipping participants with a well-rounded toolkit for safe glacier travel.

Here’s What To Expect

Itinerary

Day 1 Technical Fundamentals: The crew will meet at Heather Meadows at the Mount Baker Ski Area to cover technical fundamentals. This includes essential gear (how it's used and cared for), knots & hitches, snow anchors & anchor systems, mechanical advantage theory, and setting up the rope for glacier travel. The day will end with a complete instructor demo of crevasse rescue and some time for students to then practice putting it all together.

Day 2 Crevasse Rescue Practice: Where the first day was a lot of instruction, this second day is geared towards putting all the learned skills to the test with direct peer and instructor mentorship. After students demonstrate the ability to perform essential rescue skills, instructors will add complexity to the scenarios and teach rappelling and rope ascension. The day will finish with a big group debrief that includes providing students with resources for continued development.

Scheduled Programs

Scheduled Programs are open to all to sign up for. These programs are charged a flat rate per person, regardless of the number of people on your booking. This flat rate is often the same as the 3:1 per person rate. Scheduled programs tend to be more cost effective for groups of one or two people, and allow you to connect with other people with similar mountain interests and skill sets.

Technical Programs

Cascade Mountain Ascents pays guides more when they are working in terrain that is more involved or poses higher objective hazard. Therefore, a surcharge is added to trips we deem Challenging ($100) and Complex ($200). A custom surcharge may apply to non-standard programs and will be worked out by the guide and administrative staff along with the guest(s) during program design. At Cascade Mountain Ascents, we believe that everyone deserves access to safe and joyful mountain experiences, regardless of their financial circumstances.  That's why we are excited to introduce our income-based program rates.  These rates are designed to pay it forward and create structural mechanisms for mitigating financial barriers to the outdoors. They currently only apply to our Affinity Programs. Irrespective of the tier you choose, 10% of all proceeds from the program will be directly allocated to CMA's Scholarship Program.
